Japan's ISAS launched the Solar-A spacecraft, renamed Yohkoh ("Sunbeam") once in orbit, to observe solar flares in X-rays and energetic neutrons from Kagoshima. A Japan-US-UK collaboration, it operated until an eclipse-triggered attitude failure ended the mission in 2001.
