Vostok
Soviet Union and Russia1958 to 1991Vostok is the R-7 with a small upper stage, the first Soviet rocket able to reach the Moon. Its Luna launches of 1958 to 1960 fail often but send Luna 1 past the Moon, Luna 2 onto it and Luna 3 around its far side. It then tests the Vostok capsule with animals on the Korabl-Sputnik flights, and later versions launch Zenit reconnaissance and Meteor weather satellites until 1991.
