Atlas

United States1958 to 2026

Atlas begins as America's first intercontinental ballistic missile, a rocket with steel balloon tanks so thin they must stay pressurized to hold their shape. Converted for spaceflight, it carries the Mercury astronauts into orbit, and with the Agena and Centaur upper stages it sends probes to the Moon and the planets. The later Atlas II, III and V carry the line into the 21st century, the last two with Russian-built engines.
