DSP 14

Titan 402A IUSCape Canaveral SFS, FL, USA
Drawing of the Titan 402A IUS for DSP 14

Maiden flight of the Titan IV, carrying the DSP-1 (USA-39) Defense Support Program missile early-warning satellite to geosynchronous orbit via an Inertial Upper Stage from Cape Canaveral. A first-stage engine nozzle briefly hit its gimbal limit after a thrust-chamber tube failure, but the other engine compensated and the satellite reached orbit successfully.
