ASLV-D2 carried India's SROSS-2 satellite, fitted with a West German MEOSS earth-imaging scanner and a gamma-ray burst experiment, from Sriharikota. A first-stage control-gain problem kept the rocket from reaching orbit, destroying the satellite in ISRO's second Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle development flight.
