Phobos 2, the second of two Soviet probes sent to study Mars and its moon Phobos, launched atop a Proton-K/D-2 from Baikonur. It reached Mars orbit in January 1989 and returned dozens of images of Phobos before contact was lost in March 1989, just before its planned close flyby and lander release, due to an onboard computer malfunction.
