Drawing of the Molniya 8K78 for Mars 2a

Mars 2MV-3 No.1 (Sputnik 24), a Soviet OKB-1 Mars lander probe intended for a soft-landing attempt. Molniya 8K78 from Baikonur failed after about 260 seconds when central-core pressurization problems led to LOX-pump cavitation, leaving the spacecraft stranded short of interplanetary injection.
