Ariane 5 flight V142 suffered an upper-stage anomaly that stranded the Artemis and BSAT-2b satellites in a much lower transfer orbit than planned. ESA's Artemis used its ion engines to reach geostationary orbit by 2003, while BSAT-2b was declared a total loss.
