Carried Cosmos 1, the Planetary Society and Cosmos Studios' solar sail demonstrator, launched from the submerged submarine Borisoglebsk in the Barents Sea. The Volna's first stage shut down prematurely at 83 seconds, and the spacecraft failed to reach orbit, ending what would have been the first orbital solar sail test.
